The best backup setup is the one nobody has to remember to run. Vouchio works as a destination for the backup software you probably already have, so the goal here is connecting it once and letting a schedule take over.
Before you start
Have these ready from your Vouchio account, sent after your questionnaire is confirmed:
- Your access key ID and secret access key
- Your account's storage endpoint
- The name of the bucket or folder you want backups written to
Connecting desktop backup software
- Open your backup software's destination or storage settings.
- Choose a generic cloud or S3-compatible destination type, if offered, rather than a named provider.
- Enter your Vouchio endpoint, access key, secret key, and bucket name.
- Run a small test backup before scheduling anything large, to confirm the connection works end to end.
- Set your schedule: nightly is a reasonable default for active client and project files.
Connecting a NAS or server backup agent
- In your NAS or backup agent's remote storage settings, add a new destination.
- Select S3-compatible storage, then enter your Vouchio endpoint and credentials.
- Save, then trigger a manual backup job to confirm before relying on the schedule.
- Set retention in the backup software to match your plan: 30 days is included on Active Storage by default.
Point critical systems at Recovery Ready, not Active Storage
If a system needs to be part of your disaster recovery plan, back it up to a destination covered by Recovery Ready so it gets continuous replication and is included in your recovery drills, not just stored.
A quick way to sanity-check it's working
Once a schedule is running, don't just trust the green checkmark. Pick one file, restore it somewhere other than its original location, and confirm it opens correctly. Do this once after setup and then periodically; it catches misconfigurations long before you'd otherwise notice.
| Symptom | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| Backup job fails immediately | Endpoint or credentials entered incorrectly; recheck for extra whitespace |
| Job succeeds but restore fails | Backup software's own encryption key issue, not a Vouchio issue; check the software's key management |
| Backups are slower than expected | Often local network or upload bandwidth, not storage-side; test with a smaller job first |
