Where businesses actually get this wrong

The most common mistake: two "backups" that aren't independent A live file share plus a nightly sync to a second drive in the same office is two copies of data, but it's not really 3-2-1. Both copies are in the same building, on the same network, exposed to the same fire, theft, or ransomware spreading across the network. Only the offsite copy actually protects against that.

Other common gaps: backups that are never tested, so nobody finds out a restore is broken until it's needed; and backups without version history, so a slow-moving problem like ransomware gets faithfully backed up right along with your good data.

An extra layer: call it 3-2-1-1

Some businesses extend the rule with a second "1": at least one copy that's immutable, meaning it can't be altered or deleted even by a compromised account.
